Time was flying
and we couldn’t believe that the last day of intel ISEF came so fast. The last
event, the Grand Award Ceremony, was climatic in extreme. All winners were
named individually for all 17 categories. Fabian won a Second Award in Computer
Science. On the top, all winners of second and first awards got an asteroid named
after them.
As our flight left
on Monday, we still had two full days left to explore the Grand Canyon.
After a 350km trip north and a quick stop at the IMAX cinema, we reached Grand
Canyon Village. Next morning, we left early for a hike down the canyon. From
the very first moment when we stood on top of the canyon, we were thrilled its
beauty. There was no doubt: this was the most amazing landscape we had ever
seen.
As we wanted to
get a taste of the “original America”, we decided to visit the Hopi reservation
on the other side of the Painted Desert. For hours we drove on a road that lost
itself in the endlessness of the horizon. But it wasn’t boring at all: we were surprised
how much variety there was. There were miles of red rocks but also fields of
green bushes with beautifully colored flowers. And even rough and hilly
landscapes like you would expect on Mars. One thing for sure: the Painted Desert
deserves its name.
Finally, we
reached Second Mesa, the biggest Hopi village in the reservation. But there
were no traditional houses, no animals, and no people making crafts or arts. The
few seedy houses and caravans looked more like a slum. We were deeply touched. The
original inhabitants were prohibited from living their traditional lifestyle but
were also totally excluded from the western world. They were lost between both
worlds. We couldn’t stop thinking about what
hope there could be for these people and their traditions.
On our way back
south, scenery changed from desert to green forest. In Sedona, our waiter
explained us that nature there works like a huge condenser because of the iron
oxide contained in the mountains and the layer of quartz underneath. As result
there happen vortices, releases of electromagnetic impulses that are so strong
that citizens of Sedona feel literally stoned during strong thunderstorms.
Intel ISEF was an
amazing experience: We learned a lot, made many new friends from different
countries and explored the versatile scenery of Arizona.

Die Zeit verging wie im Flug und wir konnten es nicht glauben, dass bereits der letzte Tag von intel ISEF angebrochen war. Das letzte Ereiginis, die Grand Award Ceremony, war enorm. Alle Gewinner wurden für jede der 17 Kategorien separat aufgerufen. Fabian hat einen Second Award in Computer Science gewonnen. Zudem wird ein Asteroid nach jedem benannt, der einen ersten oder zweiten Platz gewonnen hat.
Weil unser Flug erst am Montag war, hatten wir immer noch zwei ganze Tage um den Grand Canyon zu besuchen. Nach einer 350km Autofahrt nordwärts und einem kurzen Zwischenhalt im IMAX Kino, erreichten wir Grand Canyon Village. Am nächsten Tag standen wir früh auf um im Grand Canyon wandern zu gehen. Vom ersten Moment an, als wir am Rande des Canyons standen, waren wir von der Schönheit begeistert. Es gab keine Zweifel: Das war die fantastischste Landschaft, die wir je gesehen haben.
Da wir einen Eindruck vom "originalen Amerika" bekommen wollte, entschieden wir, das Hopi Reservat auf der anderen Seite des Painted Deserts zu besuchen. Mehrere Stunden fuhren wir auf einer Strasse, die sich selbst in der Endlosigkeit des Horizonts verlor. Aber es war überhaupt nicht langweilig: Wir waren von der Vielfältigkeit der Landschaft überrascht. Mehrere Kilometer von rotem Stein, aber auch Felder von grünen Büschen und Blumen in allen Farben. Und auch rauhe, hügelige Landschaften, wie man sie vom Mars erwarten würde. Eines ist klar: Painted Desert verdient seinen Namen.
Schlusseldlich erreichten wir Second Mesa, das grösste Dorf der Hopi im Reservat. Aber da waren keine traditionellen Häuser, keine Tiere, keine Leute die ihr Handwerk verrichteten. Die wenigen Häuser und Wohnwagen erinnerten mehr an ein Slum. Die Ureinwohner können ihren traditionellen Lebensstil nicht weiterführen, sind aber auch von der westlichen Welt ausgeschlossen. Sie stecken zwischen den beiden Welten fest. Wir konnten nicht aufhören nachzudenken, was für Hoffnung es für diese Leute und ihre Traditionen gibt.
Auf unserem Weg zurück wechselte die Landschaft von Steppe und Wüste zu grünem Wald. In Sedona erklärte uns unser Kellner, dass die Natur dort wie ein grosser Kondensator funktioniert, weil es viel Eisenoxid in den Bergen und darunter eine Quarzschicht gibt. Dies führt dazu, dass es während Gewittern starke elektromagnetische Impulse gibt, die man in Sedona spüren kann.
Intel ISEF war eine grossartige Erfahrung: Wir lernten viel, haben neue Freunde aus vielen Ländern gefunden und konnten die vielseitige Szenerie von Arizona erkunden.
